Early Reading & Phonics

We are truly passionate that all children learn to read, as reading is the gateway to all learning. Therefore, we strive for every child to learn to read and for them to develop a love and passion for reading through sharing stories. We want your child to love reading – and to want to read for themselves. In order to achieve this goal, we have a proven, highly successful reading and phonics scheme called Read, Write, Inc.

The Read Write Inc. Phonics programme

Children in our Nursery Class begin by sharing a range of stories, rhymes and poems. We also begin the early stages of phonics teaching.   We teach phonics to the children in Reception to Year 2. This means that they learn how to ‘read’ the sounds in words and how those sounds can be written down. This is essential for reading, but it also helps children learn to spell well. We teach the children simple ways of remembering these sounds and letters. The children also practise reading (and spelling) what we call ‘tricky words’, such as ‘once,’ ‘have,’ ‘said’ and ‘where’. The children practise their reading with books that match the phonics and the ‘tricky words’ they know. They start thinking that they can read and this does wonders for their confidence. The teachers read to the children, too, so that they get to know all sorts of stories, poetry and information books. They learn many more words this way and it also helps their writing.

We have a variety of Storybooks, Phonics books and Book bag books to support your child's reading at both school and home.
