Headteachers Welcome
Welcome to Highfield St. Matthew's C.E. Primary School
On behalf of all of the staff, Governors and children of Highfield St Matthew’s, we warmly welcome you to our fantastic school. Highfield St Matthew’s is a happy and harmonious school and was quite rightly judged to be Good in all areas in our most recent Ofsted inspection in March 2023. Our school team is dedicated to ensuring all children are happy, content, hardworking and successful.
The school was judged as Outstanding in our SIAMS inspection in 2016, and this reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring the highest possible standards within a Christian environment of love, respect and care. Our bespoke SHINE Curriculum provides a unique and exciting curriculum that is created to suit our children’s needs and allow them to excel in all they do. Our best practice has been externally recognised through accredited quality marks in English, Maths, Geography and Science.
As a Primary Academy, we are very proud to be part of Liverpool Diocesan Schools Trust (LDST). LDST is a family of schools that welcomes young people of all faiths and none, working together to provide an excellent education built on distinctly Christian values. We work in a collaborative way with a family of 17 schools in our Trust, and our staff benefit from ongoing training and development to continue to provide the very best standards of education and care.
We are a two-form entry Primary School with Nursery, and our school is attended by approximately 430 children. Our staff know our children and families very well, so even though we are a large school, we very much retain a family and community ethos. We have 14 bright and equipped classes, a large Nursery space plus a fabulous outdoor area for our Early Years children. We also have bright and attractive libraries in Key Stage 1 and 2 plus a sensory room. Outside we have extensive school grounds including several playgrounds, large school fields, an outdoor gym, trim trails and a MUGA.
We operate our own Before and After School Club Care Facility known as Trinity from a separate building located on the school grounds which is well equipped and homely.
We are proud to have strong and purposeful links with Highfield St Matthew’s Church and Wigan West Hub. Revd. Mark, Revd. Fran Revd Sam and other clergy come into school regularly to meet with the children and staff, and lead Worship. We also host our own SHINE Worship community in school each fortnight for families to come together, to pray, eat and share.
The ethos within our school is purposeful, calm and happy within a Christian context. We want to work with our parents and carers to achieve success for every child in our care and we highly value your contributions in this process.
Please take some time to look through our school website. Visits to school for prospective parents are warmly welcomed, and we look forward to showing you Highfield St Matthew’s CE Primary school in action!
Best wishes,
Mrs A Barron Mrs J Kilshaw
